Points Rummy: It is the shortest and quickest variant among all and played for the cash games. It is a single-deal variant where each point has a monetary value that is predetermined.
Deals Rummy: In this variant, the number of deals is fixed, and the player with zero points would be declared the winner.
Pool Rummy: It is the longest variant of the Indian Rummy courtesy multiple deals. There could be two pools, 101 points pool, or 201 points pool with multiple players. The player/s to reach 101 points/201 points gets eliminated. The last player left on the table is declared the winner.
Deadwood: Unused cards which could not be used in a sequence are called Deadwood.
Discard: In Indian Rummy, you need to lay-off an unwanted card when you pick a new one from the deck. That very card is called the discarded card.
Drop: If you think you don’t have good cards to play, you could choose to drop out of the game.
Declaration: It is the process of declaring your cards when you have formed the required sequences by discarding the 14th card in the finishing slot.
Meld: The setting of the cards into the right groups and sets is called melding.
2-6 players play the game with the objective of arranging respective 13 cards in sequences and sets. There must be at least 2 sequences, including one pure sequence for a valid declaration.
Sequence: A group of consecutive cards (3 or more) of the same suit is a sequence.
• Pure Sequence: A sequence without any Joker.
• Impure Sequence: A sequence with the Joker.
Set: Three or four cards of the same rank but different suit forms a set.
Joker: Joker is a vital component of the Indian Rummy. It could replace any missing card in the sequence (impure) or the set to complete it.
As we have already mentioned, the game is played by 2 to 6 players. One or two standard decks of cards are used in the game depending upon the number of players. Each player at the table would get a total of 13 cards dealt one card at a time. All the remaining cards from the deck would be kept face down.
A random card would be picked as the joker, and all the cards of that value (of all suits) would become wild jokers. The deck would be opened by placing the top card from the closed deck on the table face up. A player would begin the game by picking the topmost card either from the closed deck or the open deck as per his discretion.
The player also has to discard one card of his choice to the open deck to keep the number of total cards in hand to 13 only. The next player could pick the discarded card, or he could choose to draw one from the closed deck and so on.
If you have successfully formed the required sequences and sets, you would have to finish the game. In Indian Rummy, the cards have a negative value. The players have to reduce their points to zero by making a valid declaration. The points of the losing players are calculated based on the ungrouped cards in hand. A player could get a maximum of 80 points in the game of Indian Rummy.
A player is also penalized by 80 points upon making an invalid declaration. If you choose to drop the cards at the beginning of the game without picking any card, you would be penalized by 20 points. Meanwhile, if you choose to drop your cards in the middle, the penalty would be 40 points.
In Indian Rummy, all the numbered cards would have equal points as their face value, while the Ace and the face cards (Jack, Queen, and the King) are worth 10 points each.
